MEDIUMS
Painting 'medium' is the term used to describe
the substances the artist mixes with the paint to control
the durability, consistency and effect of the paint,
simply, what glues the paint to the canvas.
I use classical medium recipes
containing traditional ingredients such as poppy seed
oil, linseed oil, clove oil, stand oil, dammar varnish
and pure turpentine. With classical mediums we have
seen the durability of painters recipes last for hundreds
of years. |

STRETCHERS
A stretcher is a wood support that a canvas is
attached to for stability. A frame, in addition to providing
an aesthetic complement to a painting, also acts as
support.
Either a studio or frame mount must be
specified when ordering a commissioned painting. |

STUDIO MOUNTS
The stretchers of most of my canvases are defined as
studio mount swhich are 11/4" thick with
the canvas pinned to the back of the frame. Due to the
thickness of the mount, no additional frame is needed
to prevent warping of the canvas. This finish is a popular
mount for an art salon collection appearance. With studio
mounts, custom frames are required only for additional
decoration. |

FRAME MOUNTS
Frame mounts
are 5/8" thick. These mounts require a frame in
order to prevent warping and for aesthetic appeal. All
commercially produced frames will accommodate these
mounts. This finish is popular for most residential
and commercial spaces. |

PAINTS
Pure pigments and finest refined linseed oil
are used to make Gamblin Artists Colors. Because no
adulterants are used, each color retains the unique
characteristics of the pigments, including tinting strength,
undertone and texture. By using artists' grade oil colors
I can take advantage of these tinctorial and textural
differences. |

SIZES & GROUNDS
The Ground is the foundation of an oil painting. A size
seals the porous fabric and isolates it from the ground
and/or oil paints. Linen and cotton will prematurely
rot without a size layer. Only fabric supports need
sizing. All of my paintings are sized with P.V.A then
three ground coats are appied. This is a traditional
method for proffessional iol painting. |
